Our Path to Brand Identity

You may have noticed that some things have changed around here over the past few months. We’ve always believed that the way we present ourselves visually has a huge effect on, not only the way people view what we create,  but also the creations themselves.

We’ve spent a few years figuring out New Wrinkle’s brand identity.

No surprise, it’s pretty difficult to nail down exactly where your creative fancy will take you in the foreseeable future.

So, we asked Hannah Rose Creative (who, in adherence to the New Wrinkle tradition of keeping things in the fam, happens to be Jared’s sister-in-law) to help us immortalize our vision. Lucky for us, she was super excited to jump on board!

The first thing Hannah did was send us a detailed questionnaire, which we had fun adding jokes to (perks of working with family) … but tbh, it was super enlightening for us to work through the questions and clarify, even for ourselves, what our exact vision for New Wrinkle has always been.

Through our novels, our desire is to share the importance of self-acceptance in order to fulfill one’s purpose in life. By working as a family and bringing together our respective arts of writing, illustration, and music, that’s our message as a team, as well. And specifically, that’s why we’ve chosen to focus on young audiences, from here on out. Many young people are on a journey of self-discovery, and we want to be a friendly voice, empowering every unique soul to seek out their greatest potential by looking inside themselves. We hope those who read our stories will feel the call to follow their own paths, and seek out deeper connections to all of the things that bring them joy and fulfillment.

We’re thrilled with how Hannah interpreted our vision, and we hope you love it too! Take a look at our awesome new logo, and check out Hannah’s Instagram post to discover the incredible thought behind it.

Hannah also created hand lettering for the cover of our newly-released second edition of Archie of Outlandish, which added a special sense of identity that we are totally in love with. 💕

Hannah is legit one of the smartest and most efficient creators you’ll probably ever encounter. As anyone in a creative field knows (especially one where you work alone, like Han), it takes a lot of personalization and a strong sense of self to keep a steady flow of inspiration and motivation. For those budding creators who may be reading this, we asked Hannah how she manages her biz and uses it to live her best life.

On Inspiration (and Making work a Blast)

Hi, Hannah 👋

Inspiration is something that every creative wants—but it can be illusive. Because it comes in bursts, it can be hard to experience it on a regular basis. However, there are ways to make it flow consistently, from small things like music, coffee, and a clean environment; to scheduling time for inspiration. For me, sometimes that means that I spend a good half hour on Pinterest, pinning beautiful graphic designs pieces, photos, and colors. Other times I’ll spend that time browsing Dribbble and keeping up with other designers that I follow. What’s important is that I schedule that time in no matter what. It’s amazing how alive your mind can be after just a little time spent cultivating inspiration!

As important as those activities and elements are, it’s the deeper values and meanings that really drive inspiration. In working with New Wrinkle Publishing, my inspiration came from the close relationships that I have with the whole Kraft family, and their own core values of kindness, self-acceptance, and love. Their talent and passion for art, music, and stories—and combining it in a way that the publishing world hasn’t seen before—were an inspiration to me as well.

On Being Her Own Boss

…discipline and drive are what make it all work.

Being my own boss is a responsibility and a privilege all at the same time! One of the ways in which I’ve benefited has been having the ability to explore any paths I want to take. Because I’m in charge of my schedule, I can decide to make time for education, practice, and experimentation. It takes more than just the opportunity though—discipline and drive are what make it all work. I’ve also been able to better avoid burnout by taking charge of each of my days and adjusting it as needed. Sometimes it’s better to have a shorter, more relaxed work day, and then come back refreshed the next day!

Another benefit has been the ability to do work in an organic way. In working on New Wrinkle’s brand identity, I spent one day reading through their answers to the questionnaire I sent over and developing initial concepts. By the end of that day I had completed the concepts and presented them, and those initial concepts ended up only needing a few adjustments! While that isn’t the norm for me, and I typically plan more time for development and refinement, in this case I was so inspired and excited that the whole process went much faster. Being my own boss allowed me to take that time and change my normal procedure.

On Why Han Loves Her Job + Life

Each time I work with an individual or business I’m able to be a part of something bigger than myself.

There are so many rewarding parts of what I do. I’m able to make more time for family and friends, since my work goes with me and my schedule is flexible. For the last six years I’ve been able to travel on a regular basis to visit the people I love, and it has added more to my life than I can even express. Being able to work a job I love that allows me to make time for what I care most about is invaluable.

It’s also such an honor to be able to help other creatives find success in their businesses. Each time I work with an individual or business I’m able to be a part of something bigger than myself. In the case of New Wrinkle, I was able to help represent all the passion and the mission of the business through the visual branding! Being able to create a visual representation of all the talent that fuels New Wrinkle was so much fun and so meaningful.
